Figuring it out

Hello everyone.
I'm still doing just fine. Still trying to figure out what I'm going to write about in these emails. People always ask questions like how are you adjusting to the mission and I don't ever know what to say. I didn't have to adjust anything I just do it. Do people find it hard to change? The only thing I truly miss are the people I was with in the MTC. I will see if I can get a picture to send of us.

New York is nice. It is getting warmer and the trees are going to start budding probably. The people are nice here and even the people who aren't warm are not abrasive or rude. Mostly everyone claims to have faith but there have only been a few that you can tell live their faith. It seems everyone is having a hard life but then they don't want to talk to the people that are trying to help them.

I'm sure all this is obvious to everyone but I have to talk about something or else my emails would consist of -"*shrug* I'm doing fine."
I don't do well with talking to groups of people so if you want to talk to me email me personally or write me a letter.
My address right now is -
6384 Broadway
Lancaster, New York 14086

But the mission office is -
460 Kreag Rd
Pittsford, New York 14534

Oh and that Zachary kid is going to be baptized on the 29th. He is so awesome. We taught him last Monday and he is so happy. That's why I came out and I hope that we can find more people that will accept our message because I know it can bring joy to our lives.

I wish everyone a great week, and I'm sure this is to short for some and too long for others.

17 April 2017

I hope you all had a great Easter Sunday. Ours was awesome. My companions are Elder Beardall and Elder Holmes. They are zone leaders and we are always busy. I like to finally be doing something but I do miss my MTC district. I was told by Elder Beardall that I'm the most cheerful guy he knows..... that was weird. I also found out I have dimples. Weird stuff. I feel like I'm eating half the time which is new to me. I hope you are all doing well. I will send some pictures and then some more in my weekly email.

Weekly email

So I left the MTC Tuesday morning. We woke up at 2:30 and cleaned up our room and went to the airport. The previous night we all said goodbye to the two sisters who are going to salt lake. We all went up to salt lake in a bus and then we got our tickets. I stuck with my district even though I wasn't going with them. I made sure everyone got to call home and then I ended up calling a little before I had to go. I flew to Detroit and then Rochester with a bunch of sisters. When we got there we went street contacting and that was fun. That night I still didn't have a companion so I slept alone in the basement of the mission home.

The next morning we got to go see the Hill Cumorah and then walk through the sacred Grove and then we went to go get our companions. I'm in a trio again with the zone leaders. We are over Lancaster. Elder Beardall is from Utah, and Elder Holmes is from Colorado. We then got to work

We have taught a few lessons and we have one kid named Zach who wants to be baptized. His family is Jewish but he has been taking the lessons for a while. He finally turned 18 and is set to be baptized on the 30th. He is an awesome guy but I just met him. Elder Holmes has been in this area for three transfers so he is showing us around and doing work. We are teaching quiet a few people and finding many more with the Easter video and such. There are a lot of nice people here. We get fed dinner here almost everyday. I'm glad to be out here and I hope everyone is okay back home.

The Sacred Grove

That's where we live

Welcome!

Welcome to Elder Jones' blog!  I will post any emails from him (if we get any!) here as well as pictures.  It is April 17th and we received not one picture from the MTC.  I'm hoping that we will see some now that he is in the mission field.  Enjoy!

Bonus pictures!

A mom posted these pictures of the hike that Erik went on on the facebook page.  Yay for pictures!

Erik arrives

11 April 2017

{Erik called from the Salt Lake City airport and sounded GREAT.  He said he loved the MTC and was excited and anxious to get to work in the field}

From the mission president, President Evans -

Bishop Bassett,

I hope this finds all well with you.  We sent out the e-mail below to inform parents that their missionary has arrived safely and is doing well.  We do not have an e-mail address in our system for Elder Jones’s parents.  If possible could you forward this to them.  I was very impressed with how Elder Jones jumped right in and went out street contacting this evening.  He did a great job and is off to a great start. Thank you for recommending him for service!  May God bless you and your family for your service!

Warm regards,

President Evans

Dear Parent,

We wanted to let you know that your missionary has arrived in Rochester safely and in good health and spirits.  We picked the missionaries up at 5:00 pm at the airport and took them right to downtown Rochester where they went out and shared the gospel with people on the streets.  Each one of them placed copies of the Book of Mormon and many return appointments were set.  We then went to the mission home for dinner. Followed was a short meeting to cover some of the needed logistical issues of the mission (driving, finances, health & etc).  We then put them to bed because they have been up since 2:00 am and were worn out.  Tomorrow they will arise at 6:30 am and get ready. We will have breakfast at 7:30 and at 8:00 am we will head out to the Hill Cumorah and the Sacred Grove (we will take a group photo at the Sacred Grove and will e-mail it to you in the next few days).  At 11:00 am they will meet their companions and by early afternoon they will be in their area proselyting or serving at the historical sites (The sisters may have a full time proselyting, part time proselyting-part time historical site or full time historical site assignment.  These assignments will rotate throughout their mission). This is such an outstanding group of missionaries.  Sister Evans and I love them already and are very excited to serve with them here in the Cradle of the Restoration. They will send you an e-mail on their preparation day letting you know where they have been assigned.  Because of the various site assignments our Sister missionaries have various days of the week that are their preparation day, so it may be a day other than Monday. Sisters Evans and I will do all in our power to watch over, care for and help these wonderful missionaries to strengthen their faith in Jesus Christ and His restored gospel. Please do not hesitate to reach out to either of us if you have concerns or need to share information about your missionary.  We truly do feel it a sacred privilege to serve with such devoted disciples of Jesus Christ. Thank you for sending us such a wonderful and prepared missionary!

With much appreciation,

President Zach Evans

MTC emails - the few that there were . . .

22 March 2017
I'm still living. my p day is tuesday. Peter was in the orientation video..

28 March 2017
I just realized I think I left my pen and ink In my box. I thought that I had put it in my suitcase. Can you send that to me if you can. It's just in the box downstairs. {Yes, seriously, this is the extend of the emails from my taciturn son}

{Here's the real email from today though}

The first week at the MTC is stupid busy. I guess it's to help people with homesickness or something, but it just sucks for people that don't get homesick.

My district is alright. I'm in a trio and I'm the district leader. There is only on Elder that is 18 and two that are 19 and another that is 20 like me.

We started teaching some assigned "investigators" we are not told if they are or aren't members but there are both here in the MTC. Anyways I don't care. I'm happy to finally have people to teach. One is a BYU student named Kimberly she is fun to talk to and she comes from  a Christian family but not a avid one. She wanted to learn more about the book of mormon and Joseph Smith. The second one is Sydney Young a old lady who is really into family history and she has researched a lot of churches over the years but she doesn't know much about the LDS church. She was super fun to talk to and I can't wait to go back.

I am learning a lot and I was surprised at how prepared I was to come here. I felt like I wasn't going to be but I hope it stays that way.

I don't have time for pictures.

Oh and can you send my the poem "the touch of the masters hand". I don't have it memorized anymore.

4 April 2017
Conference was good. One of the best parts of the MTC is watching talks given by General authorities so conference was awesome. Ya I liked all of them but Renlund's talk on how Shepard don't recoil from sick sheep. And Holland's talk of course.

It's only me going to Rochester. I think maybe some sisters are going.

I'm almost through the MTC. We didn't get another district before conference so since the one before us left yesterday we are the only group until Wednesday. I have basically been in stasis until I get out into the field so there isn't much to say. I'm sure there will be more to talk about after I'm out of here. I'm getting better at teaching that's all that's important.

{Here's the poem since it seemed to be very important to him}

The Touch of the Master's Hand
'Twas battered and scarred, and the auctioneer
      Thought it scarcely worth his while
To waste much time on the old violin,
      But held it up with a smile.
"What am I bidden, good folks," he cried,
    "Who'll start the bidding for me?"
"A dollar, a dollar. Then two! Only two?
      Two dollars, and who'll make it three?"

"Three dollars, once; three dollars, twice;
      Going for three…" But no,
From the room, far back, a grey-haired man
      Came forward and picked up the bow;
Then wiping the dust from the old violin,
      And tightening the loosened strings,
He played a melody pure and sweet,
      As a caroling angel sings.

The music ceased, and the auctioneer,
      With a voice that was quiet and low,
Said: "What am I bid for the old violin?"
      And he held it up with the bow.
"A thousand dollars, and who'll make it two?
      Two thousand! And who'll make it three?
Three thousand, once; three thousand, twice,
    And going and gone," said he.

The people cheered, but some of them cried,
    "We do not quite understand.
What changed its worth?" Swift came the reply:
    "The touch of the Master's hand."
And many a man with life out of tune,
      And battered and scarred with sin,
Is auctioned cheap to the thoughtless crowd
      Much like the old violin.

A "mess of pottage," a glass of wine,
    A game — and he travels on.
He is "going" once, and "going" twice,
    He's "going" and almost "gone."
But the Master comes, and the foolish crowd
    Never can quite understand
The worth of a soul and the change that is wrought
    By the touch of the Master's hand.
